River Ghost   Year: 2006

Written by Bill Mallonee for CyBrenJoJosh (BMI)

you found yourself surrounded
by noise and by strife
a flower never grounded
a twisting of the knife
into the flesh of innocence
but even that gets worn
till you're wishing you could check out
or never had been born
and so you said your prayers
and crucified your hope
held your breath and kept your fingers crossed
and headed for those river boats

so you became a gambler
and as we all well know
every gambler has a long sleeve
for the cards he won't show
and it may win you riches
and it may buy you clothes
but it'll never dress the loneliness
your busted heart knows
and you looked just shy of stunning
in that persian silk vest
and felt top hat you donned
certainly grabbed the lady's interest
and you'd utter some french phrases
as you gathered up your loot
keeping eyes peeled and mindful still
of the pistol in your boot

they took a picture of you and your winnings
you cleaned table and till
all those ladies dressed in jewels and sable
hell you could hardly stand still
but beneath that candid moment
and as the flash hits your skin
and washes every boast
when the print hits the chemicals
and all you see is ghost

i wonder what it felt like
on the night of that full moon
spread out across the waters
of a mississippi june
she recognized the innocence
you had buried way inside
like a treasure she would open
if she could catch your eyes
yeah it's the hardest hand you'll ever play
confused by love and lust
is it time to fold your hand
and surrender all to trust

Did You Know?

This song was originally planned to be released as part of BillTunes in December of 2006, but was replaced with "Got Nowhere" as the recording was not deemed to be good enough.
