you can tell mary
thank you for the prayers
thank her for the tears she cried
if i don't make it there

ask her for some new shoes
if she's got clout by now
but i suppose that by that point
it won't matter anyhow

excuses there's no shortage
of alibis there's no lack
maybe we're just grains of truth
falling through the cracks

and of course they're as big as texas
and as long as your arm
i'm known to mix them with a little drink
ah don't look so alarmed

'cause once it all felt just like a game
that you could never win
sometimes it was a mine shaft
caving in

the old felt hat i wear bows down
when the cold wind has her say
like some old ill-fitting suit
you patch up everyday

and all those best and detailed maps
well they never led you home
and after all that time elapsed
i just felt alone

tell mary she's remembered
as the clock hands slowly creep
across the face of this here race
in the miles before we sleep

yeah and tell her she is beautiful
that martini in tow
just in case i don't make it there
i'd want her to know

Appeared On…
