Tobacco Sunburst   Year: 2007 | Run Time: 4:34

(There is an another version of this song with alternate lyrics. Show me.)

Written by Bill Mallonee for CyBrenJoJosh (BMI)

well it all seemed so unprotected there
she was beautiful and he waved to the people standing there
the caddy it slowed down and from up and out of nowhere
heartache always seems to line up in the crosshairs
cartridges give way to prayers and then
all those monitors they flatline as the paper hits the stands
it's a dram to take the edge off of the curse
you chase it down with tobacco sunburst

step into the light preach a little each night
second star to the right until morning just to say
we're all underneath God's starlight
a little high to keep the stage fright more or less at bay
and you grasp for coins and find that they're all spent
you're under the less-than-benevolent gaze of your darker elements
it's a dram to take the edge off of the curse
you get it done with tobacco sunburst

you step into the dark across the street to a nearby park
to a bench carved by lovers who keep calling my name
and i talk to mary alice who's now living in a palace
waiting for our lucky day
when all your hands of God reveal your lack
still you're all shiny and new just like jack's cadillac
it's a dram to take the edge off of the curse
you drive it home with tobacco sunburst

Did You Know?

An "alternative" version of this song appears on Circa. Tobacco Sunburst is the name of a popular guitar finish. Bill states, "The guitar and the road have been a huge source of connection to the world for me." He goes on to say about this song: "My mom and dad were huge supporters of John F. Kennedy. I remember her picking me up at my Chapel Hill, NC elementary school with tears in her eyes and a lump in her throat the day JFK was killed. I reference that shooting in the first verse, road life in the second and a tribute to Mary Alice Mallonee in the third." Mary Alice is Bill's mother who passed away on May 29, 2006.
