Promise in My Pocket   Year: 1994 | Run Time: 3:36

Written by Bill Mallonee for CyBrenJoJosh (BMI)

when the cold wind blow
screaming in my ear
when my friends fall away
and all my enemies cheer

i don't do that much talking
put the promise in my pocket
and i just start walking

when the demon is in the cellar
and the wolf is at the door
the boss man says hey bill
don't come around here anymore

when the bread line gets a little longer
and my soup is a little thin
long overdue to change my newspaper shoes
before the frostbite settles in

last night in my dreams at least
i was having a great big feast
on the grand central to chicago
then the beat cop wakes me
with a rap across my feet and he says
move along boy ain't no joy in this

when the factories are shut down
and i'm dealing with depression
it might have been the welfare line
trying to make your good impressions

Did You Know?

Bill describes this as a song about not having a job. It was never recorded in the studio, but was released via BillTunes as part of a live show at Eddie's Attic from 1994.

Appeared On…
